Dear Member,Enclosed is the latest Dates for Your Diary. Please note the imminent deadline for booking a meal at the AGM… We hope to see you all there, even if you are not eating – it’s your meeting, your chance to have your say, so please support it.
Sara will be doing a review of the year at the AGM so I won’t steal her thunder by telling you all the news since the last newsletter. There will also be the usual election of committee members at the AGM, to replace those who are retiring. To avoid confusion, please let me remind you of the following, which is all in the constitution but some of you have probably lost that by now!
One third of the committee, ie the longest serving ones, retire “by rotation” at the AGM. As we normally have 12 committee members, this means that 4 places become available on the committee and it is these 4 places that are filled by election at the AGM. This year the 4 retiring by rotation are Sara Bowie, Amye Farrington, Fiona Farrington and Dot Turner. In addition Will Holland is retiring from the committee. Will is going to continue to help with shows etc but feels a new committee member from a different household to the secretary would spread the work load better.
Sara, Fiona and Dot are willing to stand for re-election but Amye has now gone to university and so does not wish to stand for re-election to the committee. We have had two people put their names forward since my request for candidates in the last newsletter – they are Gabby Franklin and Phil Barker, who would replace Amye as the junior rep on the committee. Brief details of all candidates and all existing committee members are overleaf.
Once we have elected the committee at the AGM, the committee will elect the officers at their next meeting and the secretary, whoever that may be, will notify you of the officers with the minutes of the AGM. The agenda for the AGM is as follows:· Apologies
· Minutes from last meeting
· Chairman’s Report
· Secretary’s Report
· Treasurer’s Report
· Election of Committee Members
· Appointment of Auditor
· CloseBest wishes.

PS One of our members, Marie Mead, is trying to coordinate purchasing Snowflake Premier shavings from Snowflake direct. Smallest delivery they do, however, is on a large artic and is 17 pallets @ 35 bales per pallet, but the price per bale is significantly lower @ £5:00. Would there be Riding Club members interested? She has access to a large yard in Hirwaun and fork lift for unloading the lorry (essential). Interested parties would have to collect from this yard, preferably on the day of delivery. Payment with order only and splitting pallets would not be practical so if individuals required less than 35 bales they would need to share pallets. If you are interested tel 01874 622880 Marie Mead.
GOLDEN VALLEY RIDING CLUB COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Existing Committee Members:
Cheryl Brown I live and work just outside Hay-on-Wye – my husband and I run a fire damage restoration and carpet cleaning/care business. I judge dressage at the lower levels but am training to improve my grading status. I have my own young horse. I joined the riding club to enjoy the local, low-key events and for the training and social aspects and I joined the committee to particularly help with the promotion of dressage, especially as a fun, not high-brow, activity.
Helena Charlesworth I live in Clifford and run a competition/livery yard in Whitney-on-Wye. I do quite a lot of teaching riding club and pony club members (not just GVRC and GVPC) as well as competition riders. I compete myself, mainly in dressage but also a little eventing. I organise most of the training days for GVRC as I am Training Officer and Deputy Chairman.
Tracey Garrett I am a freelance instructor and international three day event groom turned cleaner to earn a living! I am a member of the riding club because it is nice to be involved with a local club which offers a wide range of events for a wide range of local riders, as well as social events.
Marion Hughes I live in Painscastle and I am currently working as an internal auditor for Powys County Council. I have a partbred Welsh Cob who I like to compete at local levels. I enjoy cross country, showjumping and most activities involving horses. I try and input activities that appeal to all kinds of people at all levels. I first joined the riding club as I felt there was a need for an organisation in the area for people like myself who and interested in horses and having fun. I am presently Deputy Secretary.
Becky Miles I live in Bryngwyn near Painscastle and I work with horses, running a small riding stables, teaching and taking hacks out on the hills. I enjoy hunting and local shows, competing for fun. I joined the riding club because if offers more events and activities for local people.
Kate Thomas I live in Clifford and am an English teacher at secondary school level in Peterchurch. I have my own horse, who is now in his teens, but we still enjoy competitive riding at the lower levels. I am also Chairman of Golden Valley Hunt Supporters club. I joined the riding club to be able to enjoy the local events, compete in teams (providing the jumps are not too high for my old man!) and benefit from the training.
Anna Yates I live in Clyro and work in Hereford as the finance director for a large removals company. I have three horses, two currently eventing and one 2 year-old who will hopefully go eventing when Helena has pursuaded him to accept someone on his back! They are all home bred. I joined the riding club as I wanted local events to go to and because it gives ordinary people access to top trainers at more affordable rates. I am presently GVRC Secretary and Treasurer.
Existing Committee Members Up for Re-Election:Sara Bowie I own Bowie and Hulbert and Brook Street Pottery in Hay-on-Wye – we sell contemporary ceramics, jewellery, prints and terracotta pots (made by my husband Simon). I keep my horse, Vinnie, with Helena at Cabalva and he has just finished his first season eventing. I have spent the last year as Chairman of GVRC and I feel very strongly that the club should cater for all members – those wanting to compete, those wanting to ride for fun and those not wanting to ride at all but just join in the social events.
Fiona Farrington I live and work in Peterchurch. I ride for pleasure and would like to continue to promote pleasure and social riding and activities.
Dot Turner I live in Peterchurch and manage the ladies shoes and handbags department at Chadds in Hereford. I have bred and shown dogs and enjoy gentle riding. I joined the riding club to help promote social activities for riders and non-competitive riding.
New Candidates for Election:Phil Barker I live near Erwood and have been acting as the junior rep on the committee for the last couple of months while Amye has been sitting exams and preparing to go to university. I have my own horse, with whom I enjoy showjumping and cross-country. I joined the riding club to benefit from extra lessons and training and I enjoy the competitions, including team events.
Gabby Franklin I live in Michaelchurch Escley. I have been riding and around horses for as long as I can remember, so am justifiably slightly bonkers! I have a passion for showing, especially native ponies. Since leaving university I have worked in driving trials, livery, showing/stud and welfare yards. Now a total career change has given me much more time to offer my services to GVRC. I am an enthusiastic, reliable and willing worker who really enjoys being a GVRC member.
